Founded in 1929 by Frantisek Janecek in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Jawa Motorcycles was named by combining the first letters of Janecek and Wanderer, the German automotive manufacturer whose motorcycle division Janecek acquired. Initially, the motorcycles were sold under the Ideal Jawa brand, and after 1973, they were also marketed under the ‘Yezdi’ brand. Although production ceased in 1996, with several models discontinued, the Yezdi brand made a comeback in 2022 with the relaunch of three models: the Yezdi Roadster, Yezdi Scrambler, and Yezdi Adventure.
In October 2016, Classic Legends Private Limited (CLPL), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, signed a licensing agreement to reintroduce motorcycles under the Jawa brand in India. On November 15, 2018, CLPL launched two models: the Jawa and the Forty Two. Exactly one year later, the Perak was introduced to the Indian market. In 2021, a new version of the Forty Two, called the 42, debuted with a refreshed design and updated features. By October 2022, the 42 Bobber was launched, featuring the same engine as the Perak, but with more chrome and additional color options. These models are all manufactured in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh.
