INTRODUCTION

Amid a significant rise in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country over the last year, particularly in the two- and three-wheeler segments, EV startup River in Feb 2023 launched its first electric two-wheeler model to grab a share in the fast-growing market. River’s e-scooter model, Indie, comes with a motor that has a peak power of 6.7 kW and can reach a top speed of 90 km per hour. RIVER INDIE OVERVIEW & PRICE

The River Indie EV is a large and unique scooter in terms of design and features. The twin-beam LED headlamps impart a futuristic look to the scooter. The tail lamp is a big-curved rectangular unit. The design supports utility. This electric scooter has 43L storage under the seat and another 12L storage space in the front glove box. It also gets alloy clip-on handlebars for relaxed posture and better handling.

The River scooter rides on 14-inch alloy wheels and gets telescopic front suspension for precise handling. The rear gets a twin hydraulic setup. The seat is wide and shaped ergonomically for comfortable rides. The floor bed is 20 inches wide, suitable for traveling with more carriables. It also has 165mm of ground clearance. Because of these, the River calls the Indie ‘the SUV of electric scooters.

Regarding the power figures, the Indie is powered by a 4kWh battery pack, which claims a real-world range of 120km. The motor produced a peak power of 6.7 kW (9bhp) and 25Nm max torque. The electric scooter has a maximum speed of 90kmph and can accelerate from zero to 40kmph in 3.9 seconds. The battery can be charged up to 80 percent in 5 hours using a standard charger. It gets three riding modes – eco, ride, and rush. It also offers a gradability of 18 degrees for easy climbing on elevations. FOR CONVENIENCE, a TFT color display, two USB ports, and a reverse parking assist are also added.

River electric scooter is available in two variants: Utility and Lifestyle. The manufacturer offers three dual-tone color schemes for the Indie – Monsoon Blue, Spring Yellow, and Summer Red, all set against a matt black body. The current ex-showroom River Indie price is ₹ 1,38,000.

River is a utility lifestyle company based in Bengaluru. With an emphasis on design and technology, this company builds products that positively impact people’s everyday lives. This company was founded in late 2020 by Aravind Mani and Vipin George; it is backed by marquee investors such as Chris Sacca’s Lowercarbon Capital, Maniv Mobility, Toyota Ventures, and Trucks VC.

It invested most of the funding it raised in product development and R&D. The startup has an R&D facility in Bengaluru and a manufacturing facility in Karnataka’s Hoskote. The company plans to offer to charge and battery packs that will range in size, maintenance, and connectivity packages offered through subscriptions. The river will not take on the costly task of building out charging infrastructure. Instead, the company plans to operate a charging franchise system.
